This time Network to innovate team joins forces with FOREST4EU and AF4EU Horizon Europe projects. The online workshop “Agroforestry” will take place on April 8, 2025.
In a nutshell, agroforestry means combining agriculture and trees. But what does it mean in practice - how to best combine trees, shrubs and hedges with crop farming or grazing? What are the benefits of agroforestry? How could it best be applied in the Baltic Sea region?
Welcome to get inspired by agroforestry examples and to discuss the topic further:
- Advancing Agroforestry in Southern Finland: Lill-Nägels Agroforestry Pilot Site. Joshua Finch initiated the Lill-Nägels Agroforestry Pilot Site in 2022, focusing on a silvoarable system to remediate degraded agricultural land and produce quality food via community-supported agriculture. This project emphasizes biodiversity and community engagement while advancing agroforestry practices through the Finnish Agroforestry Network.
- Northern Climate and Apple Varieties as a Source for Innovation on Countryside. The EIP-AGRI Operational Group in Umeå, Sweden, aims to enhance climate-resilient agriculture by planting over 12,000 apple trees in 10 hectares, fostering collaborations between local growers and food processors. The initiative, running from 2020 to 2024, seeks to create innovative products such as ice cider, supporting sustainable agriculture in northern climates.
- Farmers’ Bottom-Up Approach in Development of Agroforestry Innovations, Networks, and Business in the Netherlands. Piet Rombouts has been pivotal in establishing farmer-led agroforestry networks throughout the Netherlands, promoting the adoption of agroforestry practices. His work focuses on soil and water management while also representing the Netherlands in the European Agroforestry Federation to further expand agroforestry initiatives across Europe.
- Developing Agroforestry in the Netherlands through Small Scale Agroforestry Pilot Experiments. Marieke Booij-den Nijs oversees a project in Noord-Holland that implements small-scale agroforestry plots for farmers to experiment with. The initiative includes creating step-by-step guidelines for integrating agroforestry and builds on prior results from a previous EIP-Agri Operational group project aimed at advancing agroforestry in the region.
